Abstract

The objective of this Open & Distance Learning (ODL) system of education is to develop capacity within and across the region to organize distance learning effectively in order to address the educational challenges and opportunities, particularly in higher education. This ‘non-conventional’ system is slowly trying to dominate and may soon replace the conventional and full-time contract education system especially in the field of higher education all over the world. But these (Student Support System) SSS plans, policies and strategies are not devoid of drawbacks and therefore, cannot be regarded as a yardstick measurement and standard for the open university’s non-traditional ODL education. This conceptual work is an attempt to present some of the drawbacks of the ‘student support services’ & its interaction related to the students’ academic development. It also offers some suggestions in academic improvement in the ODL system of education in the Open Universities. Overall, we intend to examine the rationality and the scope of applicability of SSSs in the related areas in our country for open and distance learning.
