Abstract

Student perceptions of the distribution of power in colleges and universities may be a factor in campus unrest, This study is an exploratory attempt to measure these perceptions on two different campuses and to compare present perception with what is seen as ideal. A questionnaire developed by Tannenbaum and Kahn (3) was adapted for use on the campus. Answers were quantified and mean scores compared. There are interesting differences between the two campuses, but in general, although the students wished more power for themselves, they did not wish it at the expense of the faculty or administration. Thus, the findings were consistent with observations made in other types of organizations-that total amount of power can be expanded.
