Abstract

The role of a university lecturer as a scientist, teacher and psychologist is enormous. During recent years the paradigm of science is changing, i.e. it is more orientated at students’ autonomous learning (especially fulfilling the documents of Bologna process). Nevertheless the role of a lecturer has not become less important. This article is based on data of empirical research and is about students’ requirements for a university lecturer as a scientist and a teacher. The strategy of cognition object is phenomenological. The method of collecting data is group discussion. Purposive homogeneous selection of groups has been applied and 5 different groups of students of educology have been chosen. On the basis of discussion data categories have been formulated and interpreted theoretically. The research revealed students’ needs and requirements for a lecturer as a scientist, a competent person, who is a professional, devoted to one’s job and makes a big influence on students, inspires and shows an example of relation to the science to be followed. Students measure a lecturer as a teacher according to the highest standards. KEY WORDS: university lecturer, scientist, competent person, teacher of adults, phenomenon.
