Student Future Outlook and Counseling Quality in a Rural Minority High School

Abstract

This study sought to determine whether differences in future outlook among students in a predominantly minority, rural North Carolina High School were impacted by 5 variables: quality of counseling, race, gender, grade level, and academic performance. We found that quality of counseling and self-reported grades were positively associated with future outlook. Furthermore, we sought also to determine if and how race, gender, grade level or academic performance influence a student's perception of counseling quality. We found the perception of counseling quality to be positively associated with gender, grades and grade level. Finally, we studied student-reported problems associated with less than excellent counseling quality and found some differences in the perception of problems based on gender, grades and grade level.
