Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss engagement strategies for synchronous and asynchronous online learning. To begin, we define the terms synchronous and asynchronous in the context of online engagement for distance learning. Then we explore some of the challenges that affect engagement in online learning, including equity and access, home environment considerations, adult support at home, and scheduling considerations. The rest of the chapter outlines examples of tools and strategies for engagement in both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments.
