Abstract

Hazards connected with use of the stud gun-an industrial tool used to pound metal studs into concrete, metal, or wood-were reported to the AMA convention by two New York physicians. We are now aware of 45 stud-gun injuries including 18 cases reported from foreign sources, Sigmund Mage, MD, and Kenneth Chiache Sze, MD, said. The stud gun, a powder-activated tool used widely in construction industries, operates on the same principle as a firearm, using the explosive power of a blank cartridge to propel metal studs. Utilization of a firearm as an industrial tool does not lessen its danger as a weapon, however. Injuries, ranging in severity from trivial to lifethreatening and even lethal, may be caused by ricocheting of the stud or by its actual penetration of the receiving part to become a free-flying missile.
