Abstract

Stubby head is a multi‐ovary, ‐ovule, ‐embryo sac mutant induced in pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides (Burm.) Stapf. and Hubb.) by a dual treatment of the thermal neutrons and diethyl sulfate. The mutant has shortened internodes and flattened stems and produces a rosette of leaves around a stubby inflorescence. Cytological tests and progeny tests indicate that it is a facultative apomict. This mutant could make a significant contribution to the improvement of pearl millet if it can be developed into a usable form.
