Abstract
A description is given of a series of model tests in soft clay involving excavation through the clay with the vertical sheeting being supported by spring loaded struts. A method is proposed for calculating the total thrust carried by the struts and comparisons with observations are made. Comparisons are also made between individual observed and calculated strut loads, the latter being determined from a trapezoidal apparent earth pressure distribution.
