Abstract

This research aims to determine the structure and meaning of protection mantras in Malingping District as learning material for literary appreciation in high school. Qualitative descriptive type or approach with data collection methods using interview methods and data analysis methods using content analysis, using Philip Mayring's flow. Five protection spells, namely (1) Mantra to keep wealth safe from theft; (2) Mantra to avoid being touched by supernatural beings; (3) Mantra to avoid the dangers of hot water (scalding); (4) Mantra to avoid danger both on land and in water; (5) Mantra to avoid interference from spirits entering the body. The results of the analysis of the five mantras have a complete physical structure, namely: diction, figurative language, imagery, rhyme and rhythm as well as typography. Apart from that, it also has a complete inner structure, namely: theme, feeling, tone and atmosphere, purpose or message. Then in terms of meaning, the five mantras have contextual meaning and idiomatic meaning.
