Abstract

(Hydroxypropyl)cellulose (HPC) films cross-linked from different concentration solutions and under various shear conditions have been prepared using a shear-cross-linking device. The HPC films so prepared show a nematic liquid crystal (LC) structure when the solution concentration is above the critical concentration. The molecular chain direction in the nematic LC films is parallel to both the surface of the film and the shear flow direction. The degree of orientation has been quantitatively expressed using Hermans' orientation function
