Abstract

In France as in Germany, in nuclear industry, or at least the branch of nuclear industry which builds power plants, one has seen in the seventies the withdrawal of U.S. multinationals, and the rise of 2 monopolies, EmpainFramatome and Siemens-KWU. Moreover, French nuclear industry, manufacturing nuclear fuel and power plants, has proved more powerful and forward going than its German counter-part for several reasons : — first, technico-economic one: a nuclear power plant is first metallurgy (main function of Empain) and secondary electrical engineering (Siemens). — Reason of industrial organisation: Empain practices integration whereas Siemens sub-contracts all over Europe. — Reason of industrial policy : thanks to EDF's orders, Empain has batches whereas Siemens has not. In short, the French pattern is more efficient.
