Abstract

Structures which can be considered to be built up from slabs of identical material, each displayed by a constant amount with respect to its neighbours, are described in terms of the shift lattice and the general form of their diffraction patterns has been derived. The theory is illustrated by reference to the (M,Ti)O 2-x crystallographic shear (CS) structures, the alloy Au 5 Mn 2 antiphase domain structure and a number of hypothetical constructions.
