Abstract
A design is presented for a superconducting structured-cable quadrupole for applications requiring operation in high heat load and/or radiation damage to the superconducting coil. The application that motivated the design is the first quadrupole Q1 in the triplet lenses of the insertion region optics for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The coil utilizes a structured cable in which 6 strands of superconducting wire are cabled around a thin-wall spring tube, and compressed within a high-strength outer sheath. This cable-in-conduit approach provides stress management within the coil and volumetric cooling flow within every cable turn, and eliminates the need for insulation between turns so that the coil is less susceptible to radiation damage
