Abstract

Abstract Many diacetylenes undergo 1,4-addition polymerization in the solid state. In the course of our work we have discovered several examples in which seemingly minor changes in the constitution of highly reactive monomeric diacetylenes have rendered them inert. The subtlety of the effects, revealed by structural studies, illustrates the stringent packing requirements for solid state polymerization.
