Abstract
The nuclear mass surface is analyzed in terms of its observed structural properties, and a formula is developed for the binding energy which is easy to use and is accurate, over all, to \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.54 Mev, and, for $A>214, \mathrm{to} \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.27$ Mev.
