Abstract
In electron micrographs of the larval brain of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, two categories of neurosecretory neurons were found. Large cells, identified with A′-cells of light microscopy, contain largely electron-lucent vesicles and scanty electron-opaque granules. Smaller cells, probably corresponding to A″-cells, are filled only with electron-opaque neurosecretory granules. Electron-opaque granules in both kinds of cells appear to be formed in the Golgi apparatus. There is no definite evidence regarding the origin of the electron-lucent vesicles. The aggregations of electron-lucent vesicles in A′-cells correspond to inclusions staining with Gomori's chrome hematoxylin and paraldehyde-fuchsin in light-microscope preparations, and to the secretory material exhibiting an intensive fluorescence under ultraviolet light after potassium permanganate treatment and staining with pseudoisocyanin.
