Abstract

This review and the accompanying references will be concerned mainly with the global and large‐scale seismic structure of the earth's mantle. Regional studies and data relevant to the uppermost mantle are thoroughly discussed in other reviews in this volume. For convenience the references are divided into separate categories. Emphasis in the last 4 yr has been placed on the determination of radially symmetric reference earth models from gross earth data, the increase and improvement of the gross earth data set including free oscillations and differential travel times, the search for lateral variations at all depths in the mantle and the development of regional earth models, the refinement of shear wave models, improvements in body wave, free oscillation, and inversion theory, and the attenuation of body waves.
