Abstract
The pride in Soviet accomplishments in the study of the continental litho-sphere, expressed in the introductory paragraphs below by the late V. V. Belousov, is not unjustified. It is fortunate that on the eve of the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, the major conclusions relating to a territory comprising one-sixth of the planet were assembled into a single monograph published by Nauka Press under the title Glubinnoye stroyeniye territorii SSSR. In Part I, the structure at depth is discussed on a region-by-region basis. In Part II, to appear in a forthcoming issue of International Geology Review, the findings are integrated into generalized models of the litliosphere and its development through geologic history.
