Abstract

The sites of various restriction endonucleases were mapped on the DNA of cauliflower mosaic virus isolate Cabb B-JI. FspAI, HgiAI, HhaI, and XhoI each cut at one site, PstI and PvuII each at two sites, BglII at five sites, and HindIII at nine sites; SacP, SmaI, and XbaI did not cut this DNA. These sites and those of BamHI, EcoRI, and SalGI were compared with the sites of these enzymes on the DNAs of 32 other CaMV isolates. Considerable variations were found both in numbers and map positions of the sites of the restriction enzymes. The significance of this variation is discussed.
