Abstract
1. The sulfide phases of the Fe−S system (FeS, Fe1−xS, Fe3S4, FeS2), were identified experimentally and by x-ray diffraction, and electron microscopic studies. These data were used for phase analysis of the diffusion layer on sulfocyanided cast iron piston rings. 2. Sulfocyaniding of cast iron piston rings leads to the formation of a diffusion layer of sulfides or nitrides. 3. Sulfocyaniding more than doubles the wear resistance of the rings.
