Abstract
The products of the reaction between lead acetate and tetraethoxysilane in 2-methoxyethanol at 100°C were estimated by kinematic viscosity measurement and infrared and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. Two reaction methods were used; in method I lead acetate and tetraethoxysilane were mixed in 2-methoxyethanol, whereas in method II each reactant was pretreated in 2-methoxyethanol and then mixed. The reaction product in method I was estimated as (CH 3COO)PbOSi(OC 2H 4OCH 3) 3, which polymerized on prolonged heating. In method II lead acetate and tetraethoxysilane were changed to (CH 3COO)Pb(OC 2H 4OCH 3) and Si(OC 2H 4OCH 3) 4 respectively before mixing. The reaction product in method II was estimated as (CH 3OC 2H 4O)PbOSi(OC 2H 4OCH 3) 3. No polymerization reaction occurred because of the absence of acetyl group in the reaction product.
