C 9 H 10 O 3 , Mol. wt. = 166.1, monoclinic, P 2 1 / c , Z = 4, F 000 = 352, a = 13.868(1) Å, b = 5.153(1) Å, c = 11.896(1) Å, β = 102.17(1)°, V = 831.05 Å 3 , ϱ c = 1.327 gm cm −3 , m.p. = 418(1) K. The structure of paramethylphenoxyacetic acid is redetermined accurately by direct methods and refined by full-matrix least-squares to R = 0.048. The molecules dimerise about a centre of symmetry, as is usual with simple carboxylic acids, and the O … O distance is 2.610(5) Å. The geometry of the carboxyl group suggests that the group is disordered.
