Abstract

We have obtained high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images of poly(dA-dT)·poly(dA-dT) and poly(dG-dC)·poly(dG-dC) adsorbed on Cu(111) substrates. STM revealed that the two deoxyribonucleic acid molecules have different adsorbed structures and topographic heights. We concluded that the observed structural differences originate from the inherent differences in the stability of the adenine–thymine (A–T) and guanine–cytosine (G–C) base pairs.
