Abstract

POWDER photographs show that the deformed gamma structure Cu32Al19 has 51 atoms in each of the pseudo-cubic unit cells; it is closely related to the cubic structure of Cu9Al4 with 52 atoms per unit cell1. Whereas the latter is found with 21/13 or 22/13 electrons per atom, the deformed structure takes up to 89 electrons to 51 atoms. The complex quantities may be approximately simplified to the ratios 5/3 and 7/4 respectively; these improper fractions correspond to the monotonic sequence2 (2n−1)/n. (Cu is monovalent, Al trivalent.)
