Abstract

• Presence of Ga in α-Fe lattice significantly expands limit of Cu solubility in it. • Alloy FeGaCu contrary ab initio -based predictions has low magnetostriction . • The reason is 25% increase in modulus of elasticity compared to classic FeGa. Within the framework of the theory of the influence of the electronic structure on the magnetostriction in FeGa alloys, it is believed that the addition of copper to a binary alloy can lead to an increase in its magnetostriction. In this work, experimental studies of an Fe 3 Ga 0.7 Cu 0.3 composition were carried out, which revealed that copper alloying led to a significant increase of the elastic modulus resulting in the degradation of magnetostriction.
