Abstract

The structure, Curie temperature, high field magnetization and magnetostriction of pseudobinary Sm 2Fe 17− x Al x , compounds were investigated. These compounds are essentially single-phase, having the Th 2Zn 17−-type rhombohedral structure for x ⩽ 1.4. With increasing x, the Curie temperature of SM 2Fe 17− x Al x increases monotonically whereas the saturation magnetization and magnetic polarization at 4.2 K decrease. The magnetostriction of as-cast SM 2Fe 17− x Al x compounds is smaller than that of the annealed samples with the same level of aluminium substitution. The as-cast SM 2Fe 17, samples contain some α-Fe. The superior magnetostriction compared with the annealed sample is probably a result of the preferential orientation of the cylindrical arc-cast samples.
