Abstract

Structure images of Y2O3 (space group Ia3¯) are studied using a high resolution transmission electron microscope with a resolution of 0.17nm. Although 3/4 Y-atoms are shifted by only 0.035 nm from cationic position of the CaF2 type structure, obtained images are clearly different from the images of the CaF2 type structure. The observed atomic positions of the image are not always the same as the exact projected positions of Y-atoms. For the structure image of the (001) plane, only the same features repeat for every other atomic column. For the (110) plane, a staggered configuration of the projection of the atomic columns is observed. For the (111) plane, positions of the oxygen vacancy chains parallel to the [111] direction are observed since atomic columns of Y-atoms are shifted by the oxygen vacancies.
