Abstract
Cytoglobin (Cygb) is a hemeprotein belonging to the globin superfamily. It is mainly expressed in fibroblasts, cardiomyocytes and vascular smooth muscle cells. The main function of Cygb is unclear. It has been reported that Cygb is involved in oxygen storage, reactive oxygen species detoxification, collagen synthesis, nitric oxide (NO) metabolism, regulation of gene expression, signal transduction, anti-fibrosis, anticancer, and regulation of blood pressure. In this article, we mainly review its structure characteristics, physiological functions, reaction mechanism, and the relationship of Cygb with some diseases, hoping to provide theoretical basis for future research.
