Abstract

AbstractThe gynoecium of Pergularia has bicarpellary, subapocarpous, superior ovary with ovules on marginal placenta. Ovary wall that transforms into fruit wall, can be differentiated histologically into epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp. The single layered epicarp is interrupted by stomata, trichomes and spines. Mesocarp consists of three zones: outer, middle and inner. Air chamber develops in the pericarp due to the disintegration of middle mesocarpic cells of the mature fruit. Endocarp is two layered and fibrous appearing in surface view as parquetry pattern. Dehiscence of the follicle is marginicidal. The major metabolites like starch, protein, lipid and the enzymes peroxidase, cytochrome oxidase and acid phosphotase are localized in the pericarp tissue.
