Abstract

VETERINARY SCHOOL HISTORY AND CURRENT STATUS Veterinary education in Warsaw began in 1824 when the first veterinary school opened in Burakow, near Warsaw. At that time the veterinary school was part of the Agronomic Institute. The school did not function very long; after the failure of the November Insurrection, which broke out in 1830, the veterinary school, like all schools and universities in the Polish Kingdom, was closed. The Warsaw Veterinary School remained closed for 10 years and was reopened in 1840 under Russian influence (1840–1873) and later Russian rule (1874–1915). In 1889 the school achieved the status of an institute and became a component of the university, which brought improved teaching and training conditions. The year 1901 brought significant changes with the transfer of the Veterinary Institute to new facilities located at Grochowska Street, on the right side of the Vistula River. This complex of buildings was designed and constructed to meet the particular needs of laboratories, clinics, and auditoria.
