Abstract

In this paper, we discuss synthesis, structure and luminescence properties of Eu2+ activated SrScSi4(O,N)7. The crystal structure was refined from the X-ray powder diffraction pattern using the Rietveld refinement method. The strontium scandium oxynitride composition is isostructural with the family of compounds MYSi4N7 (M = Ca,Sr,Ba) with hexagonal crystal system and space group P63mc. The refined unit cell parameters, a=5.9133(4)Aå, c=9.6338(7)Aå suggests lattice contraction with cell volume 291.73(5) Aå3 compared to SrYSi4N7 (306.83(1)Aå3). The Eu2+ activated material shows efficient green emission peaking around ~520nm under UV excitation with an excitation band at ~350 nm. The blue shift of emission peak position compared to SrYSi4N7:Eu2+ and its correlation to crystal structure will be discussed. We also investigate the nature of the emission and excitation bands in this Eu2+ doped material at low and high temperatures.
