Abstract

As one of the most common auxiliary braking devices, eddy current retarder can greatly improve the safety and comfort of driving. Eddy current retarder is extensively applied due to its simple control and low cost. This paper presents a novel structure of eddy current retarder in which the coils are wound at the bottom between the salient poles of the stator of the retarder. Compared with traditional hub-type eddy current retarder, coils and stator salient poles have higher space utilization. The novel eddy current retarder is preliminarily analyzed based on the electromagnetic theory, and the finite element method is used to analyze the performance of the novel eddy current retarder. The novel eddy current retarder with the same design space and weight was compared with the traditional hub-type eddy current retarder. According to the analysis results, the braking torque performance of the novel eddy current retarder are better than that of the traditional hub-type eddy current retarder at the low speed and large coil current.
