Abstract

Four model unsaturated polyester prepolymers and two industrial resins were studied by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). A calibration curve was set up with model resins and used to characterize the industrial unsaturated polyester resins. Weight average molecular prepolymer weights were determined from the new calibration curve. They were lower than those determined with polystyrene or epoxy calibration curves. The observation of SEC chromatographs proves the formation of diol-ISO-diol (where ISO = isophthalic acid) and MAA-diol-MAA structures (where MAA = maleic anhydride) in the beginning of polycondensation reactions. This gives information on the future structure of the UP network.
