Abstract

The structure and magnetic properties of Y 2(Fe 1− x Al x ) 14B compounds were investigated. These compounds are single phase with Nd 2Fe 14B-type tetragonal structure when x ⩽ 0.12. With increasing x the a axis decreases slightly whereas the c axis, the axial ratio c a and the cell volume increase linearly. The Curie temperature and saturation magnetization (room temperature and 4.2 K) decrease markedly with increasing x. The room temperature magnetocrystalline constants K 1 and K 2, as well as the anisotropy field H A , decrease monotonically with increasing x. However, at 4.2 K, the magnetocrystalline constant K 1 and the anisotropy field H A increase slightly with increasing x up to x < 0.04. K 1 decreases monotonically when x > 0.04, H A behaves similarly when x > 0.10.
