Abstract

X-ray and magnetic studies were carried out on LiCuC1/sub 3/ 2H/sub 2/0. The x-ray study, carried out on monoclinic crystals, gives lattice constants a = 6.078, b = 11.145, c = 9.145 A, beta = 108 50' and a space group = P2/sub 1/c. The strurture indicates that a ground state triplet is to be expected, and the paramagnetism of the crystals down to 5.9 deg K supports the existence of such a triplet, the reciprocal of molar susceptibility vs. T curve approximating that expected for the triplet rather than those for the singlet or independent ions. The susceptibility is not reversible above 220 deg K. (D.L.C.)
