Abstract
A series of epitaxial Co/Cu sandwiches has been grown by UHV evaporation with Co thicknesses varying from 5 to 36 Å and a constant Cu thickness of 15.2 Å. The analysis of the RHEED patterns observed during the growth shows the hcp(0001) structure of the Co layers. From the magnetization measurements we determine a strong uniaxial anisotropy, which tends to align the moments along the normal to the layers for Co thicknesses below 5 Å.
