Abstract

Morphologic changes of the C cells in newborn rats in conditions of hyper- and hypocalcemia were studied by electron microscopy. In the electron microscope the parafollicular cells are characterized by an abundance of dense granules : a very extensive Golgi region and an endoplasmic reticulum consisting of perinuclear narrow, orderly arranged cisternae. Following administration of CaCl 2 there is a decrease of the secretory granules with appearance of fully degranulated C cells. After treatment of the animals with EDTA (Titriplex) three types of C cells were found a) C cells with dense granules, identical to the C cells in the control animals, b) degranulated C cells with many vesicles and few moderately dense secretory granules, c) C cells with abundant transparent vesicles and lack of secretory granules No difference was noted between C cells from the animals treated with EDTA only and those treated with CaCl 2 and EDTA. These changes of the C cells are considered to be related to the altered levels of serum calcium.
