Abstract
The cervical mucus is a complex secretion produced within the cervical canal and crypts and containing compounds from different areas of the female genital tract. The major site of production of the mucus is the secretory epithelium of the cervix which is rich in dense secretory bodies containing the characteristic viscoelastic mucus. However, the mucus obtained by aspiration of the cervix will also contain proteins and low molecular weight compounds from serum transudation, soluble proteins secreted by the uterine epithelium and probably peritoneal fluid from the pouch of Douglas. Additionally the possibility of contamination with seminal plasma must not be overlooked.
