Abstract

Clonidine is an effective antihypertensive agent which can be taken orally (Shaw et al. 1984). A transdermal therapeutic system (Catapres-TTS) has been developed which when applied to intact skin delivers clonidine to the systemic circulation in a rate-controlled manner for seven days (Shaw et al. 1983). Advantages of Clonidine-TTS include reduction of the daily dosage of drug required to control hypertension, reduction of the frequency and intensity of side-effects, and improved patient compliance in treatment. The transdermal system minimizes the variability in systemic input of drug which could result from the variability in skin permeability, by placing a high percentage of control over the rate of drug delivered to the blood stream, in the dosage form itself.
