Abstract
Ever since the beginning of this century, the Netherlands has been an important center for fundamental research on the structure and dynamics of the galactic system. Work by Kapteyn (1904) and Hertzsprung (1905) has led to methods which form the basis of much current research in this field. Recently, the first comprehensive explorations of the galaxy at 21‐cm wavelength were made in Holland. To enable young astronomers to hear, first hand, the results of current investigations, an international summer course in science was held from July 28 to August 16, 1960, at Nyenrode Castle, Breukelen, The Netherlands, on the “Structure and Evolution of the Galactic System”. NUFFIC (Netherlands Universities Foundation for International Cooperation) was the sponsor, aided by a grant from NATO.
