Abstract

Abstract Placoma vesiculosum Schousboe ex Bornet et Thuret has not been studied till now from a structural point of view. Cell division is by constriction and posterior delimitation of equal or unequal daughter cells. No evidence of divisions in perpendicular planes was observed. The cell size increases from the outer to the inner part of the colony and at the same time a progressive accumulation of granules can be observed. In the outer region, alignments of cells can be occasionally observed too. Individual cell sheaths are layered and the intercellular mucilage homogeneous. Thylakoids are concentric but much of the time they are obscured by phosphate granules. Placoma vesiculosum probably has a wider distribution including marine and saltwater epicontinental waters.
