Abstract

1. Improved contact endurance of case-hardened steel 12Kh2N4A by shot-peening is attained in the narrow range of strain-hardening regimes in which the substructure of the martensite of the case does not suffer local damage. 2. It is recommended to combine plastic surface deformation with subsequent low tempering that is necessary for the relaxation of local microstresses, and also for additional strengthening of the martensite by strain-aging. As a result of such combined hardening the contact endurance of steel 12Kh2N4A increases threefold.
