Abstract

The paper reviews a range of existing coaching models published from 2000 to 2010 that have been widely used in the field of executive coaching, personal coaching and performance coaching. It has been found that these models provide a comprehensive template or pervasive structure of effective coaching practice. The structure covers seven main elements: coaching relationship; learning process; evaluation of outcomes; context and environment; essential coaching skills; qualities and attitudes; and finally ethical consideration. The paper unpacks each element and discusses the characteristics of effective coaching practice. It concludes that coaching practitioners should design their models based on these fundamental elements and ground their practice in solid theoretical understanding and empirically-tested models.
