Abstract

Education is the key intervention for bringing change in knowledge, values, behaviours and lifestyles and is required to achieve sustainability and stability. There is a need to bring shifts in thinking, values and actions of individuals and institutions worldwide in order to make concern for sustainability a central theme in all education. This would be the most important contribution of educational institutes to the sustainability agenda. In dealing with this issue, the systems approach can offer a perspective more useful than analytical approaches, because the systems view is a way to thinking in terms of connectedness, relationships and context. The article delineates the role of knowledge, education and educational institutes in sustainable development and proposes a 'mutual learning model'. The article is concluded with future direction of higher education.
