Abstract

This paper presents a new topology optimization method that considers multiple performance criteria reliability to obtain, at the conceptual design phase, the most reliable designs of mechanical structures for both static and dynamic problems. This method is developed based on frame elements, and its aim is to offer design engineers useful design insights and suggestions for conceptual structural designs such as automotive body designs. For each frame element, a circular cross-section is assumed as the simplest case, and the normalized cross-sectional area is considered as a design variable. A new type of multi-objective function based on the concept of system reliability is proposed in order to consider multiple performance criteria reliability. An optimization algorithm is constructed based on Convex Linearization (CONLIN) and Reliability Index Approach (RIA). Finally, several numerical examples confirm the validity and utility of the proposed method, which should be useful for mechanical design engineers at the conceptual design phase.
