Abstract

Mixtures of elemental powders of Zn and Se with different nominal compositions were studied by the Ball Milling technique. For all milled mixtures, the X-ray patterns show the presence of the cubic zinc selenide phase overlapped with the pure zinc structure (for the Zn-rich mixtures). For the Se-rich mixtures, the overlaps occur with the Se amorphous phase. For the zinc selenide phase, we observed a dependence of the lattice parameter and average crystallite size on the nominal composition of the mixture. The local atomic structure in amorphous Se was studied by analyzing the X-ray radial distribution function.
