Abstract

1. Numerical study of a spherical composite glass shell with a permanent connection involving a steel equatorial connecting ring characterizes its actual stress state as a whole and in the stress concentration zone in particular. 2. The test permanent connection with a connecting ring of the recommended shape and dimensions was considered to be promising, and it may be recommended for use. 3. A relationship was established between connecting ring rigidity and failure pressure for a specific structure of a steel connecting ring and a composite glass structure. 4. Supporting capacity, endurance, and efficiency of composite shells depends to a degree on disturbance of the stress-strain state in the connecting zone. Optimization of the stress-strain state of connections made it possible to prepare a composite glass shell corresponding to requirements. 5. The connector is improved by high-precision assembly of the part in the connector with reduced machining tolerances for the glass element in the contact section. Machining the glass element in the contact zone is recommended to improve and attain the third class of precision with consequent local strengthening. 6. The structure proposed for a permanent connection provides hermeticity of the composite shell over the whole period of operation.
