Abstract

The Bureau of Mines through in-house and contract research has developed a technique and related equipment to nondestructively monitor the structural stability of underground openings and detect precursors to stress-related failures such as roof separation, coal outbursts, and roof falls, both large and small. By detecting and analyzing the high frequency rock noise produced by the changing of stress conditions occurring as a result of active mining or local tectonic activity, the structural stability of the opening can be determined.
