Abstract

As operational aircraft accumulate service hours in the Israel Air Force (IAF), cracks begin to appear in structural components. IAF Logistic Center is often requested to determine whether flying can be continued without repair and the associated risk of failure. Those questions and many others cannot be addressed using only the Damage Tolerance Assessment. A computer program, RISK, based on statistical methods, was developed in the IAF to provide fleet managers with quantitive assessments of the risk associated with each maintenance decision. This paper presents the theoretical background, details of the computer program RISK and samples of two risk analyses performed by the IAF using it.
