Abstract

A majority of the 5-ring zeolites can be constructed from different linkages of infinite chains. The frameworks can as well be assembled from finite subunits, the tertiary building units (TBUs), by crystallographic symmetry operations alone. In many cases, there is a close relationship between the proposed TBUs and the 5-1 secondary building unit. Both descriptions, using infinite or finite component units, allow the similarities and differences between the frameworks to be pointed out, enabling one to easily memorize the framework structures. In a tentative description, it is shown that all TBUs describing the 5-ring zeolites can originate from condensation and/or dissociation of 4-rings.
